Wire
EDM (What is it?) - short course!!
EDM - Electrical Discharge Machining
As
someone completely new to Wire
EDM,
you can think of this machine as a very precise "Band Saw".
Any
part that could be cut on a Band Saw, could also be cut on a Wire EDM.
Instead of a continuous saw blade, the Wire EDM cuts
with electricity
surrounding a very fine brass wire. The wire goes through the
part just as a saw blade would go through a part. But, that
is about where the similarities end!
The brass wire can be very small in diameter - wires of a .002"
diameter are not uncommon. Most machines run with a .008" to
.012" diameter wire. The wire runs through the part only
once, comes out the back of the machine and generally gets chopped up.
The chopped wire is then sold for scrap.
The cutting usually takes place under water to allow the metal to be
flushed away from the part. The water is filtered and
de-ionized to remove any electrical properties. It is perfectly safe to
stick your hand in the water while the wire is sparking away!
The material being cut has to be conductive, but it can be as hard as
can be and it will still cut fine. And, it can be
as thick as 8-10" on most machines. The
cut surface is very smooth and it is completely without burrs
and rarely requires any secondary finishing operations.
The dimensional tolerances can be very tight and are often held to
.0001" or tighter. Very complex parts can be produced, as the
wire is controlled by a program - which, by the way, can be produced
from a dxf drawing of the part requirements. Where Wire
EDM really shines is on internal square corners and
complex tapers.
If you would like to discuss the process and/or capabilities of Wire
EDM, please feel free to give me a call.
